Star Codes

Star Codes

What are Star Codes?

Star codes are shortcuts for enabling and/or utilizing certain features of your phone system without use of programmable buttons or searching through menu options.

Voicemail Codes

*97 - Voicemail Access: Though most desk phones have a dedicated button for voicemail, this feature comes in handy when checking your voicemail from a softphone.

*98xxx - Remote Voicemail Access: Use this star code to access the voicemail box of an extension other than your own. For example: Ashley is at extension 101 and wishes to check the voicemail of Becky at extension 102. Ashley will dial *98102 from her own phone to check Becky's messages.

Incoming Call Codes

**xxx - Remote Call Pickup: Allows you to remotely pick up an extension that is currently ringing. For example: Ashley at extension 101 hears Becky at extension 102's phone ringing down the hall. Ashley will dial **102 to pick it up remotely.

*0xxx - Transfer a Call Directly to Voicemail: For example: Ashley at extension 101 receives a call meant for Becky, who has extension 102, but Becky is out of the office. The caller would like to leave a message for Becky so, Ashley transfers the call directly to Becky's voicemail by clicking transfer on her device, dialing *0102, and clicking transfer again.

Pro Tip: You can combine the star code above with the Busy Lamp Field (Presence) buttons on your phone. If you have green/red Presence buttons, you can dial *0, then push the appropriate Presence button to transfer the call directly to that voicemail.

Feature Codes

*62 - Call Forwarding: This star code allows access to the call forwarding menu. For more details on the call forwarding process, see this article.

*49xxx - Remote Toggle: If your phone system utilizes a toggle, that toggle has been assigned an extension number. Dialing

*49 followed by the toggle's extension allows you to enable or disable a toggle. Commonly utilized by softphone users.

*45xxx*yyy - Queue Access: Allows a user to log in to or out of a call queue. For example: Ashley at extension 101 needs to log into their customer service queue, which is extension 4001. She will dial *45101*4001 to log herself into the queue. Later she will dial the same star code to log out of the queue.

*80xxx - Extension Paging: Dialing *80 followed by an extension number allows you to immediately connect to that extension without waiting for the phone to ring and be answered.

Warning: If the extension you are trying to contact is currently on the phone, it will place their call on hold and connect them to you.

Diagnostic Codes

*43 - Echo Test - This test gives you an audible sense of the latency between you and the machine (server) that is running the echo test application. During this test, everything you say will be repeated back to you as soon as it is received by the machine.
